At the beginning of the "short" 20th century stands the Russian Revolution. It is an answer to capitalism, war and crisis. How can one acknowledge this event today, knowing the consequences? What remains?

2. Intertwined stories: contacts and conflicts in Eastern Europe.

The political and social developments in Eastern Europe involve processes of cultural transfer and mutual influence. At the same time, different perspectives arise under which these processes are understood. In its research and public activities, the Kolleg emphasizes the intertwining of different perspectives in the study of Eastern European cultural areas.

3. Different thinking in Eastern Europe

Authoritarian regimes in Eastern Europe have repeatedly caused different thinking. Research at the college is conducted on the history, philosophy and literature of Russia and the Soviet Union.

4. Religion and society

In Eastern Europe, all monotheistic religions are present, including Christianity in all its confessional forms. Religion was and is not only a meaningful authority in Eastern Europe, but also an important social and political factor. Especially for the development of national identity, the importance of religion can hardly be overestimated.

5. Migration

Migration from Eastern Europe to the West, especially to the Ruhr area and its consequences.

6. Poland 1918-2018

After more than 100 years, a Polish state was again on the political map - a result of the First World War, the European powers and the national movement of the Poles. The retrospective calls for classification.
